Website and Ecommerce

Squarespace - The best complete website solution for photographers

As a photographer and digital business coach, I’m familiar with a lot of different website systems.

Honestly, at this point in time, no other website solution comes close for ease of use, depth of functionality and cost-effectiveness as does Squarespace, 100% recommended for photographers in any niche.

SmugMug - The best all-in-one solution for image storage, shop to print

If you want a completely automated print solution from image storage to website shop, print and post, I highly recommend SmugMug.

SmugMug is an awesome solution for photographers that want to concentrate on their photography and leave the printing and packaging to someone else.

Vimeo - Website hosting for private videos

If you’re planning to produce a course teaching new photography or business skills, Vimeo is a great place to host your private videos and access them through the Squarespace website paid Member’s Area.

Thrivecart - Subscription and cart processing solution

Subscription and cart software with checkout pages, upsells and affiliate campaigns. Sell anything, digital or physical, with full upsell capability. Examples of things you can sell as a photographer are prints, LUTs, photo subscriptions, coaching & mentoring services and much more.

I’ve used this software for many years, billing hundreds of thousands through it and it’s the absolute best at what it does. You will need to add your PayPal or Stripe account to it to process payments into your bank account.

Use with your existing website or as a standalone cart checkout page straight from email or social media links.

Peach’s - Affiliate marketing and Referrals for Squarespace websites

I can’t rave about this product enough!

If you have a Squarespace website and want to get other people to promote your products and services in return for a commission, Peach’s is the tool for you.

It takes just 5 mins to set up and once you’re done your affiliates can market your wares till their heart’s content, knowing that their commissions are being kept track of by Peach’s.

You can also use Peach’s in conjunction with a QR code to sell your prints in coffee shops and restaurants. Embed the Peach’s affiliate URL into the QR code, attach it to a print and put the print plus QR code in a prominent position in an outlet where customers can scan it.

When someone scans the QR code they get taken to your website for checkout and when they pay, Peach’s keeps track of the payment value and pays the commission to your host (the outlet). All you have to do is deliver the print.

Quite frankly it’s a brilliant way to make money whilst you sleep!

Box Fresh Creative - Logo design (use code: NYSLF18J4F at checkout)

Award-winning designer placed in the top 30 out of a community of over 1.5m also winner of the Freelancer of the year award in 2019. Logo design and rebrands.

Fiverr - Graphic design services (plus pretty much anything!)

Fiverr offers extensive freelancing services for anything from developing you a new logo to creating a website for you.

Don’t be fooled by the title, although you can get some things for a fiver, most services you’d want to buy cost a bit more, but it’s usually still good value.

Grammarly - Essential tool if you’re blogging about photography

Write bold, clear, mistake-free blog posts with Grammarly.

Photo editing

Adobe Creative Cloud - Lightroom Classic & Photoshop

I don’t know how any photographer, amateur or pro, can work without these two apps!

In my opinion, absolutely mandatory!

Although there are mobile versions of these apps, you’ll need a PC or Mac to get the most from them.

Topaz Labs - Get 15% off apps like DeNoise, Gigapixel and Sharpen AI

Topaz produces the best tool, in my opinion, for denoising your photos using the latest AI algorithms.

Gigapixel is also a winner if you want to create a billboard-sized version of your photos and still retain all the clarity.

Install standalone and into Lightroom and Photoshop for easy launching.

DxO - Photo editing solutions for photographers

The photo-editing solutions offered by DxO are enjoyed by millions of photographers worldwide.

I personally use the Nik Collection Color Efex Pro 4 for managing colour in my images.

There are also plugins for black-and-white photography and analog simulation.

The plugins integrate and launch directly from Lightroom and Photoshop.

Lutify.me - Colour grading LUTs for Lightroom and Photoshop

Lutify.me is an all-in-one set of colour grading tools for photographers and filmmakers. From cinematic colour grading 3D LUTs to revolutionary LUTs Previewer.

Unlike presets, LUTs are applied as profiles meaning that no sliders are ever touched leaving you with unprecedented freedom to make your own tweaks.

Business & Travel

Revolut - Online banking, travel insurance, currency exchange

Revolut is a banking revolution for the frequent or infrequent traveller alike. It offers mobile banking, very low-cost currency exchange rates, stock and even crypto purchases.

I have personally used Revolut for personal travel insurance. There’s also a free browser extension that highlights discounts and promo’s on websites, like Wex and Amazon.

Superscript - £50 off your photography and media insurance

I recently switched my UK insurance to Superscript as they provide both photography and media insurance.

The link above gives you £50 off your annual insurance bill if you decide to go ahead with them.

Everyone’s business is different, so don’t take this as a recommendation and ensure you check the small print!

HASP - Hostile Environment Awareness Training (HEAT)

Are you the type of photographer that likes to get off the beaten track to get your shots (post-Covid of course!)?

If you are, I thoroughly recommend getting some HEAT (Hostile Environment Awareness Training) training. Rupert is an old friend of mine who has spent over 27 years in the British military and been deployed on operations worldwide.

As founder and director of HASP, he incorporates the lessons learned from his vast travel experiences, including 5 years of training BBC journalists, running his intuitive and engaging training courses in the UK, Delhi, Islamabad, and Kenya. Rupert also writes articles for the security industry and has published a number of books & eBooks including Travelling Safely Overseas”.

Outdoor Clothing

The North Face - Needs no introduction!

Winter landscape photography can be brutal at times; lashing rain, freezing winds and even snow and hail.

You need to match your clothing to the environment you plan to be in and The North Face offers some of the toughest, warmest clothing you can get outfitted in.

Icebreaker - Natural and sustainable Merino wool clothing

Let me point out that Icebreaker clothing is not cheap!

However, you’ll be able to wear an Icebreaker t-shirt for about 5x longer than a regular cotton or synthetic tee, because wool is anti-bacterial and it’s the bacteria that end up stinking the place up after a hard day hiking.

For that reason, nearly all my t-shirts these days are Icebreaker.

Being made of wool, they are natural and sustainable and saves on water as you don’t have to wash them as much as a regular tee. They are also super comfortable.

Printing

The Print Space - 50% off, use coupon 9O54E5L for your first order

MOO.COM - Get 25% off your first stationery order just click the link

Printful - Create and sell custom products online

When you want to expand the range of products you sell, put your prints on t-shirts, mugs, caps and other apparel and merchandise. Printful is a great PoD (Print on Demand) solution that plugs seamlessly into your Squarespace website.

Canon imagePrograf Pro-1000 - Ultimate home printer up to A2

If you want the ultimate flexibility to print your photos at home whenever you want at print lab-quality, this is the printer for you. From 4x6” prints up to A2 and even banner size (1.2m) with the new firmware update (v3.010).

Cryptos & NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens)

Warning:

Nothing in this section should be construed as a recommendation or investment advice.

Cryptocurrencies and NFTs are at the cutting edge of finance, technology and culture and therefore have little in the way of track record. In short, by all means, check out these resources, but do your own research before deciding.

Coinbase - Buy and sell your cryptocurrency

Coinbase is a cryptocurrency exchange where you can convert your dollars, pounds and euro’s into cryptocurrency like Ether (ETH) and back again.

Ledger Nano X - Hardware Wallet for storing Coins and Tokens

I use the Ledger Nano X for cold storage of my crypto and tokens, it works well with big exchanges like Coinbase.

MetaMask - Crypto wallet and blockchain application

Is a crypto wallet and store for tokens (NFTs). It comes as both a browser extension for Chrome and a mobile app. You can buy ETH on Coinbase.

OpenSea - NFT exchange to buy, sell and collect NFTs

OpenSea claims to be the worlds first and largest NFT marketplace. OpenSea uses a ‘lazy’ minting protocol meaning there’s no fee to list your NFTs on the platform.

Foundation - NFT exchange to buy and sell digital art as NFTs

Foundation requires an invite from another creator who has previously sold an NFT of their own and so is a little more exclusive than some of the other auction houses. There is also a fee to mint new NFTs.

Royalty-Free Music

Epidemic Sound - Royalty-free music for video’s and social media

If you’re creating content that you want to publish on your own YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Twitch and podcast without risking copyright strikes, the Personal Plan is all you need.

Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing allows photographers to earn money from the content on their website and social media by providing affiliate links to the products and services they recommend and from which they may earn a small commission. I recommend three affiliate marketing products to help with this process.

You may be asked to fill in a W-8BEN-E form if you don’t live in the US but want to affiliate market US products and services. Ask your accountant what to do, and if that fails, check this post out it may help.

KIT - Put your photography equipment together into kits

KIT is a solution for earning affiliate commissions from your recommendations. If you spend time organising what you’ve bought into kits on the KIT platform, you can then start earning affiliate commissions. If you use KIT, then I also recommend signing up for the following.

GENIUSLINK - Easy monetised links for creators like you

Geniuslink is a way to share monetised product links with your readers or audience, on your website or on your social media. It provides detailed analytics and link localisation to select the right country for your affiliate programs like Amazon. What’s better is that it works with KIT too!

SKIMLINKS - Open a new revenue stream from your content

Skimlinks is a huge time-saver! They take the hassle out of signing up for dozens of affiliate programmes all over the world, by doing it themselves and then allowing you to piggyback on their thousands of different retail affiliate programmes.

Signing up is free, but they charge a 25% fee on any affiliate commissions earned using their links. The great thing is that Skimlinks integrates perfectly with Geniuslink, giving you near-complete affiliate global coverage for very little work.

AWIN - Global affiliate marketing network

Awin has probably the largest network of affiliate schemes of any marketing network. It’s free to join, and once you’re in you can check out their directory to find appropriate merchants to apply to promote on your site.

Peach’s - Affiliate marketing and Referrals for Squarespace websites

I’ve already got a section on Peach’s above in the websites and e-commerce section, but get a Peach’s affiliate or referral subscription if you want to have OTHER people promote YOUR products and services.

Note: it only works with Squarespace websites, but my God it really is a Peach!
